Our history
Since 1910, Slotskælderen at Gitte Kik has been much more than just a restaurant, it's a piece of living Copenhagen. Here, in the old building from 1797, just a stone's throw from Christiansborg, the tradition of Danish smørrebrød lives on in the warm rooms and around the worn tables, where laughter and conversation have been heard for generations.
Before it became a restaurant, the basement housed a small aquavit distillery where the clear drink was made according to old recipes. Perhaps that's why the smell of spices and heat still lingers in the air.
Over the years, Slotskælderen has also had its faithful guests, including people from Christiansborg, politicians, civil servants and storytellers, who have made it their informal meeting place. And many still return.
The recipes are old, but not dusty. They follow the rhythm of the seasons and are prepared every day with the same care as when it all began. No frills, just honesty, flavor and the warmth you only find around a Danish lunch table.
